History of the competition

In 1997 Tadeusz Wroński wrote that this competition was born of his love for the violin. He “invented” it a long time ago, but it was only after many years that He could turn His idea into reality.  He returned to it at the end of His long and creative professional life.

The beginning was modest. With the help of His friends and faithful former students, in 1990 T. Wronski organized a competition, with the jury composed exclusively of the members of His musical „family”. While the Fryderyk Chopin University (then Academy) of Music kindly played host, everything else was „home made”: the prizes were founded by T. Wroński and His friends, the jury was composed of His musical “children”, who contributed their time and work, helped finance some of the prizes, and undertook upon themselves a burden of organizational work.  It seems they believed that this competition had a future. Time has proved they were right.  The success of this first, modest undertaking was big enough for the next competition to be organized in 1992, and then, in 1995, another one – this time of a higher rank, co-organized by the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, and the-then Ministry of Culture and Arts of the Republic of Poland.  Since1997 the competition acquired the status of an international event under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, and the Mayor of the city of Warsaw. T. Wroński died in January 2000, less than three weeks before the 2nd International Competition. His family and friends decided that the best way of remembering Him will be to continue His last creation – the competition for solo violin. For that purpose, the Foundation SKRZYPCE (the Violin), was set up in 2007.  Despite many obstacles, in 2009, our Foundation co-organized the 4th International T. Wronski Solo Violin Competition, works to develop it and to preserve its unique nature, keeping it as close as possible to the original idea of its Founder.
